In today’s market, you can find an endless array of glasses. Today, almost every shapes and compositions can be achieved with glass. Different types of glass can be processed and refined by using multiple techniques such as grinding, drilling, polishing, sandblasting, molding and toughening. The global financial and economic crisis has left its scratch on the glass industry worldwide. The flat glass industry is heavily dependent on the construction and automotive markets, has had to deal with considerable sales declines in 2009. The suppliers were also automatically affected by this trend and this is clearly confirmed by the situation for the world’s leading glass manufacturers. On 12 Feb 2009, hundreds of glass professionals gathered in Las Vegas to discuss the economy, green opportunities for glass, scrapers and other industry trends as part of GlassWeek and the Building Envelope Contractors Conference, hosted by the Glass Association of North America. In all over the world, glass manufactures and their suppliers are responding to the sales crisis with economy programs. They are increasing their sales and marketing activities. At present, their highest priorities are the intensive services of standard customers and new customer acquisition. As they offer much more than a pure product and services exhibition, an ideal framework for this is provided by involvement in international trade fairs.

According to the University of Findlay Professor Quentin R. Skrabec “The glass industry has weathered globalization better than steel and other industries. Where those industries are largely gone, innovation has kept the glass industry’s head above water”. Skrabec, who has authored a pair of books on the Buckeye State’s glass heritage, says “Initially, it was the glass industry that drew them to the area”. He adds “Those entrepreneurs largely started in the glass industry, and then they started looking at this new technology”. According to him “Both China and Germany are still bigger players in the Solar Panel market, and both are subsidized by their governments. Now, the U.S. government has started putting money into it. There’s no question (that is) helping, but we have a way to go to be able to challenge either on the world mark”.
